If you are a fan of “Anko”, sweeten red bean paste, then you should try out Naniwaya’s “Taiyaki”. Taiyaki is a Japanese style waffle, shaped like a fish with anko inside it.
Founded in 1909, Naniwaya is the “king of Taiyaki stands, ” the one and only that created the first Taiyaki that is now sold all over Japan. It has ben a local favorite for over 100 years! It all began when the founder started making these Japanese-style waffles shaped like a fish called Tai (Japanese Sea Bream), with a little bit of word play. “Medetai” in Japanese means happy and joyous, so with the wish to make customers happy, he started to make the Tai -yaki, shaped like the Tai fish. It became an instant hit, and now people in Tokyo believe Taiyaki will bring happiness if you eat it.
What is unique about their Taiyaki is that they are made one by one, using a special pan while other stores bake several Taiyakis at once. So the outer waffle part is thin and crispy, yet the dough has a nice sticky texture, and you will be surprised to see that the waffle is stuffed with Anko from head to tail! They can only make 100 Taiyakis in an hour. Their Anko uses red beans from Hokkaido, and they carefully cook the red beans with sugar for 8 hours to make the heavenly Anko paste.Their recipe is very simple, but of this makes their Taiyaki so special, and they have been loved by locals for generations.
You can also eat in if you prefer, and they offer light snacks and sweets like fried noodles, anmitsu, and shaved ice. Their fried noodles is actually a hidden hit to eat along with the Taiyaki.
The Taiyakis are 180 yen per piece. (as of Oct. 2016)
I highly recommend visiting Naniwaya to munch on happiness.
